‘we’re' here’ & we’ll always be here

The premiere episodes of Season 4 of HBO Max’s We're Here highlights the failed attempt to ban drag performances by our state legislature. David Plaza's piece in last week’s Tennessean aptly points out the missing cultural nuances and unsung heroes in the first episodes. While the show sheds light on this particularly contentious moment from last year, it truly falls short of fully recognizing the consequential efforts of and impact by local queer activists, leaders, spaces, and organizations.

It was inspiring to witness the queens’ admirable attempts to hold difficult conversations and challenge antiquated social norms throughout their travels around the state. However, it was more inspiring to see the vulnerability and authenticity shown by the Tennesseans featured in the episode. Their bravery and determination coupled with the necessary work of our local queer-centric organizations will create a safer, more-accepting environment for all Tenensseans.

The presence of the We’re Here queens symbolizes solidarity in adversity, but as Pride month in Tennessee approaches, let us use it as an opportunity to bolster our support for Tennessee’s advocacy organizations, LGBTQ+ activists, local drag artists, and queer champions. By staying energized and united, we can ensure that hard-won progress is not eroded, and the infrastructure to continue the fight is stronger than ever.
